Leslie came to the BSS+ program through Catholic Charities of Central Texas (CCCTX) seeking rental and utility assistance. Leslie was working full time, yet, had to cut back on her hours to take care of her husband who had become terminally ill earlier in the year. Her spouse had gotten progressively more ill throughout the year. He was awaiting a lung transplant in Houston, and had to wait for approval from the doctors and their health insurance. It was a very uncertain time for Leslie and her husband.
Leslie and her BSS+ case manager quickly worked together to get Leslie caught up on her bills. The couple wasn’t sure if they would need to move to Houston for medical treatment or if they were going to stay in Austin, so Leslie worked with her case worker to developed a versatile case plan that would help her be prepared for anything. Leslie was referred to counseling at CCCTX and began going regularly, so she was better prepared to deal with her stressful situation.
Unfortunately, Leslie’s husband was not approved for a lung transplant. His condition worsened and he passed away a few weeks later. With the help of friends, family, and all the resources CCCTX had to offer, Leslie continued to move forward. She was quickly approved for a more affordable apartment and was able to secure it with the help of BSS+ funds. Once everything had settled down, Leslie took time to grieve with FMLA and PTO that she had saved.
Leslie is now capable of paying all of her bills and has money left over for savings all without the help of charitable organizations. She enjoys her new apartment with her cats. Leslie was able to find a support system through CCCTX and their wide array of services. She was able to find stable housing and peace of mind, and now she looks forward to a relaxing holiday season.
